This is the website for the Quantitative Sports Analysis Group operating in the Department of Mathematics at the University of York. The group currently consists of Rich Bingham, Jess Hargreaves and Ben Powell but we enthusiastically invite anyone who is interested to get in touch and join the team! Our intention is to highlight and critique interesting applications of mathematical modelling and analysis to sports data. We take a two-pronged approach so that we:

  1. Distil potentially complex mathematical results into methods and concepts with genuine utility for sports professionals, amateurs and fans.
  2. Re-frame sports problems and data in the language typically used by mathematicians and data scientists in a way that can inform their work.

By following these two objectives we promote a dialogue between the worlds of sports and mathematics, which ought to benefit both - as well as being fun!

As an example of the sort of work we do, here is a link to the pre-print of paper Ben recently published in the Journal of Quantitative Analysis in Sport. In it he discusses methodology for ranking Formula One drivers and predicting their performance.
