2. Quantum Mechanics#

We now move on from considering quantum phenomena and looks at the mathematical formalism for quantum mechanics. This will focus on

  • The wave function of a free particle,

  • How to localise a free particle,

  • The infinite square well,

  • The finite square well,

  • Quantum mechanical tunneling,

  • Operators.

The above examples represent a very simplified picture of quantum mechanics but they will illustrate how treating particles as waves leads us to some well known observations such as quantisation of energy levels. The details of more realistic systems such as atoms will be covered later in you degree.
